IEP = Independent Educational Plan

IEP Process = The process by which a student’s individual needs are planned for.

Not sure if you should have one? Contact us to chat and we will help you figure it out.

Scroll on to read more about why you won’t easily access one through the MOE.

Our process of planning your child’s IEP.

Who needs one is not always who actually gets one?

How many times have you asked about an IEP and been told that your child is “not severe” enough?

If you haven’t yet read the blog about this topic, please do. It is a great read and will really enlighten you.

In summary :

NZ LAW rules that all children who require additional support are entitled to it.

The MOE also states that when adaptation of the curriculum is not enough, these children require the IEP Planning Process.

Schools are prescribed to work collaboratively. That includes you in every step of that process.

When schools need help getting appropriate supports, they call in the specialist educators - the RTLB.

RTLB stands for Resource Teachers of Learning and Behaviour, Specialist Educators who are qualified and trained to work this process.

So why has this not yet happened for you? MONEY!!

The MOE keeps this resource for a tiny select few, as it is costly. Have a look at this white text block. This one here that says “What RTLB do.” This is actually a screenshot of the MOE website explaining what their RTLB resource is directed to do and who they support.

As much as this resource is necessary and the prioritisation required, the MOE simply cannot afford to support everyone.

If you haven’t been allocated an RTLB to support your planning process, you probably don’t fit their criteria for this free service.

And that is WHY WE DO WHAT WE DO!
